The Utafiti Elimu Conference has consistently acknowledged that the Tanzanian education research ecosystem is constantly evolving, necessitating connections between research, policy, and practice. This annual conference continues to grow in value and engagement, ensuring that all relevant stakeholders are involved and find a platform to contribute to the sector’s solutions for better learning outcomes.
Organised in collaboration with the State University of Zanzibar, University of Dar es Salaam, Foreign Commonwealth Development Organisation, What Works Hub for Global Education, EdTech Hub, British Council and Aga Khan Foundation, the 2025 conference brought together over 160 participants drawn from mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. This year saw great participation and representation from government bodies from Tanzania mainland and ministries from Zanzibar, most of them contributing through presentations on the research needs and policy action recommendations.
We continue to witness a growing interest in investment in Utafiti Elimu Tanzania and its strategic thematic areas. In 2025, we were honored to have Vodacom Foundation, Enabel and Milele Zanzibar Foundation sponsoring the event. Additionally, there was about 40% participation from government institutions drawn from mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.
The conference themes were drawn from existing and evolving needs, which are all government priority areas for policy and action. Among the themes were: Dropout, retention and reintegration, teacher preparedness, climate, environment and education, TVET and human capacity.
